The Railroad Museum at Ardenwood

South Pacific Coast 4

This 12-foot, four-wheel, 36-inch gauge flatcar is a modern replica constructed by SPCRR volunteers during Rail Fair in September 1994 and named "Mary Jane.". Unlike most of the museum's collection of historic equipment, this car was purpose-built as an educational demonstration and functional museum asset.

The car is modeled after simple industrial flatcars that would have been used around the Carter Brothers car works in Centerville (now part of Fremont, California), representing the basic construction techniques employed for shop switching and material handling. The Rail Fair event provided an opportunity for volunteers to demonstrate historic car-building methods to the public while creating a useful piece of equipment.

Numbered as SPC #4, the replica serves dual purposes: providing functional service for museum operations while educating visitors about the basic construction principles of narrow gauge freight cars. Its simple four-wheel design represents the basics of narrow gauge flatcars, suitable for light-duty switching and material transport.
