Online Description
This 28-foot, 10-ton, 36-inch gauge ventilator boxcar was constructed by Carter Brothers in 1880 as Oregon Railway Ltd. #170. The ventilator design featured an extra set of side and end doors that had partial openings to allow air to circulate during transport of perishable food products. [Note: Historical uncertainty exists whether the car was ordered by Oregon Railway or Oregonian Railway based on the 1880 construction date.]
The car's complex ownership history mirrors Pacific Northwest railroad consolidation: Built for Oregon Railway Ltd., it became Oregonian Railway Ltd. (of Scotland) property on May 4, 1880, only months after construction. The Oregon Railway was taken over by Oregonian Railway Ltd. on December 11, 1880. Oregonian Railway Ltd. was leased to Oregon & California Railroad on October 1, 1881, though this lease terminated on May 1, 1884 with operations reverting to Oregonian Railway Ltd.
The company entered receivership from November 15, 1884 to April 4, 1890 under receiver Charles N. Scott. It was reorganized as Oregon Western Railroad Company from November 1, 1889 to April 4, 1890, though equipment was not relettered. Oregon Western Railroad Company was sold at foreclosure on April 4, 1890 to Richard Koehler acting on behalf of Southern Pacific. Property was transferred to Oregonian Railroad on May 19, 1890 (SP ownership; ORR was incorporated by SP on April 19, 1890).
The ORR was converted to standard gauge between 1890 and 1893, though some dual gauge trackage remained for narrow gauge operation until 1895. The car was transferred to the Southern Pacific-owned South Pacific Coast Railroad in 189*X*, becoming SPC #444 in 189*X* [type of car specification unknown]. It was subsequently transferred to the Southern Pacific-owned Nevada & California Railroad in 1907 as N&C #426, later becoming Southern Pacific #426. The car was retired in 191*X*.
The carbody was sold to a private party in 19*X* and spent decades near Sparks, Nevada serving as a farm shed and outhouse. It was donated to the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, Nevada in 198*X* and stored unrestored for several years. NSRM deaccessioned the car in 19*X* and donated it to SPCRR in 19*X*. The car arrived at Ardenwood [date unknown] and currently rests in storage on substitute trucks awaiting restoration. It represents one of the few surviving examples of Carter Brothers' specialized ventilator boxcar design.
