This Baldwin 0-4-2RT tank locomotive (class 6-10 1/3 C91) was constructed at Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in June 1929. It was one of ten locomotives in the final order (of three total orders) built for the Imperial Forestry Bureau of Japan for service on the Kiso Forest Railway, a 30-inch gauge logging railroad operating in the mountainous Nagano Prefecture in central Japan, west of Tokyo and north of Nagoya. The locomotive originally carried the number Kiso Forest Railway #17.
The locomotive was renumbered to Kiso Forest Railway #9 in 19*X* [reason for renumbering unknown]. At an unknown date in the 195*s, the locomotive was exported from Japan and acquired by a private collector, Henry Sorenson, in McKinleyville, California. People familiar with the purchase explain that Henry did not know he was buying a 30-inch gauge locomotive, and was surprised when the locomotive was being hoisted out onto the dock.
The locomotive underwent significant modification for California service: it was converted from 30-inch gauge to 36-inch gauge and restored to operation [date unknown] as Humboldt Northern Railway #11. It was subsequently renumbered to Humboldt Northern Railway #6 in 197*X* (documented by October 1976). In 199*X*, it was re-lettered as "Kiso Forest Railway #6" - an historically inaccurate number chosen for display purposes, as the locomotive never carried #6 while on the Kiso Forest Railway in Japan, but Henry had a number plate with a "6" on it. This incorrect numbering has been perpetuated in various published lists and online databases.
The locomotive operated at Railfair 1999 event at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento during June 1999, introducing it to a national audience and cementing its spot in railfan culture. It was donated to the California State Railroad Museum in 1999 and rotated on and off public display from 1999 to 201*X* inside CSRRM's historic roundhouse facility.
CSRRM deaccessioned the locomotive and donated it to SPCRR in 2024 [specific date unknown]. It arrived at Ardenwood in 2024 [specific date unknown] and is currently under restoration to operating condition. When restored, it will represent a rare example of American-made, Japanese forestry railway equipment operating in North America and will add significant interpretive value regarding international narrow gauge technology transfer and the global nature of Baldwin Locomotive Works' manufacturing reach.
Research note: Because the locomotive was incorrectly lettered as Kiso Forest Railway #6 during its California State Railroad Museum display period, it has been erroneously identified as KFRy #6 in various published rosters, websites, and databases. Definitive research confirms it was originally Kiso Forest Railway #17, later renumbered to #9 in Japan, and never carried the number 6 while in Japanese service.

Built by Plymouth Locomotive Works as a 5-ton gasoline-hydraulic industrial switcher, this locomotive served the U.S. Army's Badger Ammunition Plant as #581, then #588, before the facility's 1997 closure - representing the utilitarian motive power that sustained military-industrial operations through the Cold War.
Acquired by SPCRR in 1999 with the condition it be named "Katie" after a contributor's daughter, it became the museum's workhorse (after the real horses, of course) as SPCRR #1, receiving multiple rebuilds including diesel conversion in 2018. Renumbered #581 in 2020 (returning to one of its original Badger numbers), "Katie" has served as SPCRR's primary motive power from 2015 to 2025, demonstrating that modern industrial locomotives can successfully bridge preservation and operational needs.

This 5-ton industrial switching locomotive was manufactured by Plymouth Locomotive Works with a gasoline engine and hydraulic transmission. It originally served the U.S. Army's Badger Ammunition Plant as #581, later renumbered to #588 [reason for renumbering unknown]. The Badger Army Ammunition Plant, located in Wisconsin, was a major U.S. military munitions manufacturing facility that maintained an extensive internal railroad for moving materials between production buildings.
Plant operations were suspended in 1977 and the facility permanently closed in 1997. The locomotive was sold at government surplus auction to a group of private buyers in 19*X* and stored in Long Beach, California from 2*0*X* to 201*X*. SPCRR purchased the locomotive in 1999 with the condition that it be named ""Katie"" after the daughter of one of the sellers - a requirement that was incorporated into the sale agreement and has been honored throughout SPCRR ownership.
The locomotive entered service as SPCRR #1 "Katie" and became the museum's primary motive power. Initial service revealed the gasoline engine's age, limitations, and higher operating costs. After several years of service, the yellow paint showed significant deterioration. A "guerrilla" spray paint job using rust red primer was applied and the locomotive maintained its #1 designation. By 2016, this temporary paint job had badly deteriorated.
During winter 2016, SPCRR volunteers undertook comprehensive refurbishment: the locomotive was stripped to bare metal, properly painted, and lettered as SPCRR #1. During winter 2018, a major mechanical upgrade replaced the gasoline engine with a diesel engine, and air brake controls and pump were added to meet air braking requirements for passenger train operations - a significant investment that greatly improved operational capabilities and safety.
In 2020, the locomotive was renumbered to SPCRR #581 "Katie," returning it to one of its original Badger Ammunition Plant numbers and providing historical continuity. It has served as the primary SPCRR motive power from 2015 to 2025, replacing our original horse-drawn service, and has accumulated thousands of hours in revenue service.

The locomotive operated on the plant's extensive in-plant industrial railroad system. Following ASARCo plant closure [date unknown], the locomotive was acquired by M. Lummus Company of Richmond, California, a railroad equipment dealer and contractor [date unknown]. It subsequently passed to Great America Amusement Park in Santa Clara, California in the 1970s, where it is recalled but not verified to have served backstage or maintenance functions rather than guest operations.
The locomotive's preservation history involved multiple ownership changes: It was donated to SPCRR circa 1996 [date uncertain], then traded to a private owner in 19*X* who rebuilt it. The locomotive was used to help construct and establish operations on a tourist railway on Kauai, Hawaii [date uncertain], then sold to that same railway as the Kauai Plantation Railway #10 [dates uncertain]. It was traded to Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow Gauge Railroad in Felton, California [date unknown, mid-2000s], then sold to a bed and breakfast establishment for static display [name and location unknown].
A private collector purchased the locomotive in 2015 and leased it to SPCRR. It arrived at Ardenwood on September 1, 2015. Between 2016 and 2025, SPCRR volunteers undertook comprehensive rebuilding including installation of a newer diesel engine and addition of air brake systems to meet modern passenger train safety requirements - a substantial investment in returning the locomotive to reliable service.
The locomotive entered public passenger service on October 26, 2025, representing a huge milestone for SPCRR railroad operations. The locomotive runs regularly in SPCRR passenger service, having successfully transitioned from industrial switching to historical railway operations.

This 36-inch gauge caboose was constructed in Newark, California by Carter Brothers during the spring of 1882 as part of a four-unit order (numbers 45-48) for the South Pacific Coast Railroad. The car featured the distinctive "duckbill roof" design characteristic of Carter Brothers' caboose construction. While it resembles a passenger car, it actually served as a caboose and was equipped with link and pin couplers instead of the Miller Couplers used on passenger cars.
The SPC Railroad transitioned to the SPC Railway in May 1887 and was subsequently leased to Southern Pacific in July of that year. In 1906, following the San Francisco Earthquake and the standard gauging of the South Pacific Coast, the car was transferred to the SP-owned Nevada & California Railroad and renumbered as #455. The N&C was reorganized as the Central Pacific Railway in 1912, though the equipment remained under SP control. After decades of service, the car was retired as "worn out" on November 28, 1915.
The carbody was immediately repurposed as a railroad employee bunkhouse at Keeler, California, beginning its 53-year secondary life. The structure subsequently passed to private ownership in Keeler and was utilized as a ranch building, serving variously as a goat pen wall and storage shed.
This is the car whose rediscovery started our organization. In 1968, railroad historians discovered the long-forgotten caboose body on a ranch property. The Mission Peak Heritage Foundation purchased the carbody in 1977 and moved it to Fremont, California, where it was stored in the Patterson ranch barn, the facility that would later become Ardenwood Historic Farm Park. The car was transferred to SPCRR ownership and currently rests on substitute trucks in our carbarn. Only the carbody survives; original trucks and underframe were not preserved.
After many years of outdoor exposure, the body is severely degraded structurally, and plans to archive and restore the car continue to evolve as technology improves. The car is currently being surveyed and assessed to determine the next steps in its preservation.

This 24-foot, 15-ton, 36-inch gauge flatcar was built in San Francisco by W.L. Holman & Company on July 15, 1907 as Diamond & Caldor Railway lumber flatcar #64. It was part of a six-car order numbered either #61-66 or #64-69 (records conflict). As originally built, these cars were 36 feet long with 15-ton capacity, equipped with swinging arch bar (swing motion) trucks, 24-inch cast iron wheels, Westinghouse air brakes, and link & pin couplers. Construction was Oregon pine timber.
The cars were delivered without decking, which D&C added at a cost of $12.00 per car. Unloading from shipment cost $5.00. Total delivered cost was $697.60 per car ($651.00 plus $46.60 freight). At this time, the lumber mill was located in Caldor, and the D&C flatcars hauled rough-cut lumber 33 miles to the planing mill or the Southern Pacific interchange at Diamond Springs.
These cars were significantly longer than all other D&C flatcars (which were 20' and 24'). Mill crews habitually overloaded these longer cars, causing handling problems. Between 1908 and early 1913, the D&C shops cut all six cars down to 24 feet to match a prior 1905 order of 24' flatcars from Holman (#51-60). This substantial modification reflects the practical lessons learned in mountain railroading operations.
In June 1913, the California Railroad Commission valued these cars at $435.00 each with a replacement value of $550.00. The D&C's operations evolved significantly: In 1917, it began hauling logs from online points to the mill in Caldor using over sixty new 36-foot, 30-ton capacity, 4-bunk skeleton log cars built by Seattle Car & Foundry. The lumber mill in Caldor burned on July 13, 1923, and a new mill was built at Diamond Springs, opening in 1924.
From this point, the D&C mainly hauled logs from Caldor to Diamond Springs. The lumber-hauling flatcars were largely replaced by log cars, including another order in 1925 built by Pacific Car & Foundry. Car #64 may have been used as a work car or to haul lumber around the mill and drying yard. A bunk car body was built on top of the flatcar in 19*X* for employee housing. The D&C temporarily ceased operations between late 1929 and winter 1935 due to the Depression.
The railroad's end came through regulatory enforcement: The D&C had continued using link and pin couplers until 1953, though these had been outlawed on common carrier railroads in 1903. A California Safety inspector's discovery of this violation in 1952 required the D&C to upgrade to knuckle-style couplers. Rather than make this investment, the California Door Company (which owned the D&C) replaced rail operations with logging trucks. The final run occurred on June 20, 1953. Car #64 was left near Somerset, California as it was occupied by California Door Company logging employees.
The property and car were sold to a private party [date unknown] after the employees vacated. The car was donated to SPCRR by two families in 1979 (receipt of gift: December 24, 1979). SPCRR moved the car in July 1983, arriving at Ardenwood on July 4, 1983. It was stored near the barn until May 5, 1984, when it was placed on SPCRR rails at Deer Park and dismantling, documentation, and restoration began.
Historical misidentification occurred: When first recovered by museum volunteers, the car was believed to have been a former South Pacific Coast flatcar built by Carter Brothers that had been sold to the D&C. It was restored and lettered as SPC #439, becoming SPCRR's first passenger-carrying car. It operated on Ardenwood Historic Farm's opening day, Saturday July 27, 1985, under this guise. Later research proved this attribution incorrect, and the car was correctly relettered to D&C #64 in late 2001. The incorrect "SPC/Carter Brothers" attribution has been published multiple times and persists in some sources.
Original preservation plans: SPCRR initially intended only to recover the wheels, trucks, and metal parts from D&C #64 for use in restoring SPC #47 caboose for static display. Recovery of the entire car was not thought possible due to incomplete physical condition and the remote Somerset location. The car was retired from passenger service in 2016 or 2017 [verify exact date] and is currently displayed intact near the SPCRR car barn with an antique farm plow load, awaiting complete rebuilding to return to service.

One of six experimental lumber flatcars built by W.L. Holman & Co. on July 15, 1907 for California's Diamond & Caldor Railway, this car began as a 36-foot Oregon pine flatcar that proved too long for practical use and was shortened to 24 feet by 1913 - an unusual retrofit that tells the story of a small mountain railroad experimenting for the sake of operational efficiency.
Serving through the D&C's 1923 mill fire, equipment transitions, Depression-era shutdown, and ultimate 1953 abandonment (hastened by outdated link & pin couplers outlawed decades earlier), the car was donated to SPCRR in 1979. Constructed in 1901-02 at the North Shore Railroad's shop in Sausalito, California as car #2002, this 36-inch gauge caboose served the scenic Marin County narrow gauge system. When the North Shore RR merged into the Northwestern Pacific Railroad in 190*X*, it was renumbered as NWP #6101 in 19*X*, then subsequently renumbered to NWP #5591 in 1914. The car was retired in May 1930 following the abandonment of NWP's narrow gauge operations.
The carbody entered a 29-year secondary life as a shed on a farm near Point Reyes, California from the 193*s to 1959. It was donated to California State Parks in 1959 and displayed in unrestored condition at Samuel P. Taylor State Park through the 1960s. The car was subsequently donated to the Pacific Coast Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society in San Francisco.
A controversial restoration was undertaken at the Bethlehem Steel Company shipyard in San Francisco during 1969-1970, preparing the car for static display as a ""generic"" railroad caboose. This restoration applied a non-authentic paint and lettering scheme representing NWP 5591, and incorporated components from other equipment including West Side Lumber Company log car trucks and an SP caboose stove. The car was initially stored for a proposed railroad museum near Aquatic Park in San Francisco, but this museum plan was abandoned. It was then held for the proposed California State Railroad Museum in Old Sacramento.
The R&LHS donated the car to the California State Railroad Museum in 197*X*, where it was placed on a trailer for movable display at the State Fair. Despite this preparation, the car was never placed on formal display at CSRRM and was eventually deaccessioned in 2*0*X* and donated to SPCRR. Following offsite storage from 2*0*X* to 2*X*X*, the car arrived at Ardenwood in 2*X*X*.
SPCRR volunteers undertook an extensive authentic restoration from 2*X*X* to 2025, returning the car to its 1909 appearance as NWP #6101. This restoration earned certification for public passenger operation in 2023, and the car entered revenue service on SPCRR's passenger train in 2024.

Built in the North Shore Railroad's Sausalito shop in 1901-02 as #2002, this 36-inch gauge caboose served California's Marin County railways through multiple renumberings before retirement in 1930, then spent three decades as a farm shed near Point Reyes.
After an eventful preservation history involving multiple museums and a non-authentic 1969-70 restoration, the car was deaccessioned by the California State Railroad Museum and acquired by SPCRR. A meticulous volunteer restoration to its authentic 1909 appearance as NWP #6101 was completed in 2025, earning certification for passenger service - making it one of only a handful of historic narrow gauge cabooses approved for public operation in the state.

Originally constructed in 1882 by the San Joaquin & Sierra Nevada Railroad in their Woodbridge, California shops as a full passenger coach (possibly numbered #2), this 36-inch gauge car cost approximately $1,425.00 to build, though one source suggests $2,250.00. It was later converted to a combination baggage and passenger car at the SP facility in Lodi, California at an unknown date. When Southern Pacific acquired the SJ&SN on May 15, 1888, the car became Northern Railway #1010.
A major operational change occurred on August 31, 1904 when the narrow gauge was replaced with standard gauge on the Northern Railway. The car was then leased and transferred to the SP-owned South Pacific Coast as car #1010, necessitating its movement from San Jose to Mound House, Nevada. The transfer involved mounting the car on standard gauge trucks along with another car, while a flatcar carried both sets of narrow gauge trucks. During this transit, the car was wrecked on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in Reno, Nevada on January 4, 1905. Following repairs at the V&T shop in Carson City, Nevada, the car continued its Nevada service.
The car operated on lease from SP to the Nevada & California Railroad until ownership was officially transferred to the SP-owned N&C on July 17, 1907, when it was renumbered as #16 (first car to carry this number). N&C ownership transferred to the Central Pacific Railway on March 1, 1912. The car was declared "worn out" on October 23, 1913 and officially retired on December 23, 1913, with a retirement valuation of $1,000.00.
The carbody entered a 77-year secondary life, first serving as a crew shed in "car town" at Mina, Nevada from 1913 to 19*X*. Following SP ownership, the carbody was sold to various SP employees over time, with the last employee owner and occupant being a conductor. The structure was then sold for use as a sheepherder's cabin near Mina, Nevada in 19*X*, followed by purchase by an antiques dealer in Wadsworth, Nevada in 1960 (though it was not moved from Mina). A railroad preservationist acquired the carbody on August 19, 1966, and it was moved to storage at Laws Railroad Museum in Laws, California on March 14, 1969.
SPCRR purchased the car in 1990, and it arrived at Ardenwood on October 7, 1990. A complete restoration was undertaken to represent the car's appearance as SP combine #1010 during its 1904-1905 operation on the South Pacific Coast. The restored car was displayed and operated at the prestigious Railfair 1999 event at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento during June 1999. After being stored outdoors for many years after Railfair, weather began to deteriorate the car. Once stored inside at our car barn, it became a prime candidate for restoration. The car is now under active restoration and is on substitute trucks.

This 28-foot combination baggage and passenger car began life in 1882 as a full coach built by the San Joaquin & Sierra Nevada Railroad in their Woodbridge shops, later converted to a combine and renumbered as Southern Pacific's Northern Railway #1010. A combine is a half-baggage car, half-passenger coach.
The car survived a wreck on the Virginia & Truckee Railroad in 1905 while being transferred to Nevada service, went on to serve as Nevada & California #16 until retirement in 1913, then spent decades as a crew shed and sheepherder's cabin near Mina, Nevada. After recovery in 1966 and arrival at Ardenwood in 1990, it was authentically restored to its 1904-1905 South Pacific Coast appearance and displayed at the prestigious Railfair 1999 event. This operational car represents one of SPCRR's most historically significant passenger cars, and is comfy to ride in!

This 25-foot passenger coach was constructed by Carter Brothers of Newark in 1885 for the Arcata & Mad River Railroad as their coach #2, serving California's North Coast lumber country on rare 45.25-inch gauge track, - a legacy of the AMRR being the first railroad ever established in California. The car featured wood body and underframe construction, 4-wheel arch bar trucks with 24" cast wheels and 3-1/2"x5" journals, oil lamps, stove heating, and open platforms.
The car's service history reflects the adaptive reuse common to narrow gauge equipment. It was converted to Smoking Car #1 and appears in the 1916 A&MR roster with a noted purchase price of $1,250 (listed as "purchased second hand"). It is listed as:

Following the A&MR's conversion to standard gauge, the car was rebuilt with the addition of a cupola for dual passenger-caboose service.
The carbody had an extensive secondary life with industrial railways. It passed to the Northern Redwood Lumber Company where it was renumbered as #1 and the body was first placed on a standard gauge Pressed Steel Car Company flatcar #1, then later transferred to a wooden NRLCo flatcar and repainted as NRLCo #3. In the 1950s, the car was acquired by a private railroad operator in McKinleyville, California, where its frame was reinforced and mounted on trucks from the former Prather Lumber Company. Contemporary sources claimed these were ex-Northwestern Pacific trucks, though this has not been verified; the same truck style was used by the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad.
Northern California narrow gauge collector Henry Sorenson donated the car to SPCRR in 2006. It was initially stored in temporary indoor facilities beginning November 2006, then later moved to Ardenwood Historic Farm. A significant archaeological discovery in 2025 revealed an original Carter Brothers builder's stencil on an interior door, providing definitive proof of the car's construction provenance. A comprehensive restoration report was initiated in 2025. The car currently awaits full restoration and is not operational.

This funky caboose was built by Carter Brothers in 1885 for the Arcata & Mad River Railroad, California's first-ever railroad. This four-wheel horse-drawn passenger car originally served as Oakland Railroad #8, operating on the city's early street railway system during the pre-electric transit era. The car later transferred to the nearby Claremont University & Ferries Street Railway where it was renumbered as #2, continuing its service as part of Oakland and Berkley's sprawling public transportation network.
The carbody was sold to a private party in the 190X*s when electric streetcars made horse-drawn equipment obsolete. It began a new life as a children's playhouse in a private backyard, a surprisingly common fate for retired rail equipment. In the 1940s, the car was acquired by another private owner who undertook a restoration and mounted the carbody on rubber tires, converting it into a parade float and display vehicle. In this configuration, it appeared at various civic and transit heritage events throughout the region.
On January 15, 1988, the car was donated to SPCRR and placed in temporary indoor storage offsite, where it remained until 201*X*. The car was moved to Ardenwood in 201*X* with the carbody temporarily placed upon a pushcar for transportation purposes. Current assessment indicates the carbody is approximately 98% original, making it an exceptionally authentic survivor of Oakland's earliest transit era.
The car awaits comprehensive refurbishment including the casting of correct period wheels and reconstruction of an authentic underframe. Research note: This car has been erroneously listed as Oakland RR #12 in some published rosters and inventories; definitive research confirms it never carried that number and was always operated as Oakland Railroad #8.

This 36-inch gauge car began its working life circa 1904 as West Side Lumber Company log flatcar #46, serving the extensive logging operations in Tuolumne, California. In 1919, it was substantially rebuilt in the WSLCo shops as caboose #5.
The car's post-WSLCo history reflects the complex secondary market for narrow gauge equipment. In 1961, it transferred to the Antelope & Western Railroad, a private railroad in Antelope, California. It subsequently moved to the Camino Cable & Northern Railroad, a tourist operation in Camino, California. In 1974, the car passed to a private owner in Santa Rosa, California, and was later stored on a property in Auburn, California from 19*X* to 198*X*.
A significant transformation occurred when the car was acquired by the Northern Queen Motel in Nevada City, California. Using the original car frame and trucks, it was completely rebuilt as an excursion car for tourist service, preserving the authentic mechanical components while creating a red-and-white clad passenger-carrying configuration. In 2017, the car was acquired by a private owner and subsequently leased to SPCRR from 2017 through 2025.
SPCRR purchased the car outright in February 2025. The car retains the number 5 in commemoration of its service as West Side Lumber Company caboose #5, honoring its authentic logging railroad heritage while serving in its current excursion car configuration.

Originally built as West Side Lumber Company log flatcar #46 around 1904, this adaptable 36-inch gauge car was rebuilt as caboose #5 in 1919 before passing through multiple private and tourist railways over six decades.
Following service on tourist and private railroads, the car was extensively rebuilt as an excursion car using its original frame and trucks, preserving its authentic West Side Lumber Company heritage under the hood. After leasing to SPCRR from 2017 to 2025, the museum acquired the car permanently in February 2025, maintaining the number 5 to honor its historic identity as WSLCo caboose #5.
